Best of Microsoft Management Summit 2005 in the Netherlands Part 1

Today I've been to the Best of MMS 2005 in 't Spant in Bussum (http://www.microsoft.com/netherlands/evenementen/mms/sprekers.aspx), the Netherlands. Not a lot new MOM news but a nice change to talk to other MOM or SMS specialists.

The Roadshow was opened by Erwin Hartenberg the new Product Solution Manager for SMS and MOM in the Netherlands. The rest of the presentations where made by Wally Mead (Program manager in the Enterprise Team, working with TAP customers on new SMS products) and Kevin Beares (Program Manager on the MOM Product Group).

Although I've not heard a lot of new MOM news here some news about MOM and SMS.

MOM news:

System Center will not be a MOM and SMS into one combined product. System Center will be a suite of products like MS Office. There will be a Microsoft Systems Management product family. Here are some of the products of the System Center Product Suite:

System Center Reporting Manager 2005 (Beta) (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/systemcenter/evaluation/overview/reporting/default.mspx)
System Center Data Protection Manager 2005 (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/dpm/default.mspx)
System Center Capacity Planner 2006 (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/systemcenter/evaluation/capacity/default.mspx) In the future the will also be a capacity planner for SMS. At the moment there is only a system capacity planner for MOM and Exchange.

MOM v3 news. At this moment there is a TAP Event on MOM v3 at Microsoft Redmond. Next month there will be a Beta version of MOM v3 available.
(new) MOM v3 features:

Service oriented monitoring
Model based
Improved tasks and command support (MONAD) (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8a3c71d1-18e5-49d7-952a-c55d694ecee3&DisplayLang=en)
Extensive SDK
Authoring tools
Deep platform integration
Role-based user interface (granular security)
Probable cause analysis
New Microsoft MOM site for sharing self-created MOM Management Packs, scripts and more from the MOM community. A competitor of MOMAnswers (http://www.momanswers.com)? There are/were some legal issues with this new site so it's taken some time before this site will be live.

SMS news:

There are some new SMS tools available:

SMS 2003 Scan tool for Vulnerability. This tool collects the rest of MBSA data for full vulnerable assessment (passwords, shares, etc.)
Generic Scan tool (Custom Scan tool). A scan tool for non-Microsoft apps. You can create your own catalog of third-party apps like for instance Adobe. This tool will first be available for Software Assurance customers (http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/programs/sa/default.mspx).

Windows Update agent replaces MBSA and Office update clients of SMS. SMS 2003 SP1 uses the Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU) to determine the update compliance of managed systems.
SMS v4 news. The beta version of SMS v4 will be available in the first quarter of 2006. The RTM version in 2007.
(new) SMS v4 features:

Desired configuration management
IT policies and industry compliance
Model-based
Intranet to internet secure infrastructure
Integration with Windows Longhorn network access protection
Simplified, role-based UI
Unified OS Deployment.

This are some things I've heard and could remember from all the session I've heard today. We also got the DVD from the Microsoft Management Summit 2005 in Las Vegas. If I've some time to spare I'll try to look at some of the information of this DVD and will let you know of interesting news about MOM or SMS.

Hi Stefan - we'd certainly *like* to include a capacity planner for SMS in future versions of System Center Capacity Planner, but it's not yet a sure thing. Watch this space :)
