Next Version of Xian Network Manager

The next version of Xian Network Manager is a major breakthrough which will provide smarter device and network monitoring; service oriented monitoring for server applications, a management pack generation technology and powerful new integration with MOM.
Service Oriented Monitoring for Microsoft Exchange Servers will enable the next version of Xian Network Manager to discover the structure of a network which supports an Exchange environment. The Jalasoft technology, which will implement Service Oriented Monitoring for Microsoft Exchange Servers, will enable users to discover Exchange Networks, discover mail paths & monitor them and identify devices & interfaces, thus integrating networks with Exchange servers. This technology will provide alerts and execute tests on the network, streamlining the prevention of problems for Exchange Servers.
    Management Pack Generator Technology
The next version of Xian Network Manager in combination with Microsoft Operations Manager, will provide a technology which enables network vendors to generate management packs for Microsoft Operations Manager, through an add-on which will work with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. This add-on will enable anyone to describe a hierarchical structure of the devices and elements to be monitored, create rules for these, create the management packs and finally generate reports for them.
Integration with the Next Version of MOM
Among the characteristics of the new level of integration you can find; improved state view, service diagrams, custom management packs, new SDK and custom views.
    Xian Management and Monad Integration

The new Microsoft Command Shell (Monad) technology makes it now possible to create cmdlets that are embedded in the Operating System Shell. By creating Xian specific cmdlets, users will be able to handle the management of a Xian site through the command line and using management scripts that will be able to run even from MOM tasks.
I'll have to ask my friends of Jalasoft for a preview soon! Is that possible Arnold?

New weblog site! Update your configuration!

I'm in the proces of moving to a new weblog site! First I had to move to a new provider to get everything running the way I wanted. Thanks to Erik Luppes for that.

The website is running on Drupal 4.6.5 an open source content management platform.  Drupal is software that allows an individual or a community of users to easily publish, manage and organize a great variety of content on a website. Tens of thousands of people and organizations have used Drupal to set up scores of different kinds of web sites, including:
    • community web portals and discussion sites
    • corporate web sites/intranet portals
    • personal web sites
    • aficionado sites
    • e-commerce applications
    • resource directories

Click here to syndicate my new weblog.

I'll try to update both's weblogs for a while.

MOM rule report per Management Pack

This report lists all rules per Management Pack. The management pack is selectable through a dropdownlist and every change in the last 7 days will show up in red and bold. Only downside is that the report uses the OnePoint database and so you have to create a Data Source that points to the OnePoint Database and call it "OnePoint".

SNARF, the Social Network and Relationship Finder, from Microsoft Research

To many emails? Have a look at SNARF!

Microsoft Research's Community Technology presents SNARF, the Social Network and Relationship Finder.
SNARF was built around the notion that social network information that is already available to the computer system can be usefully reflected to the user: a message from a manager might be seen differently than a message from a stranger, for example. SNARF applies this idea to email triage: handling the flow of messages when time is short and mail is long.

    No upgrade path for MOMv3

As mentioned earlier Gordon McKenna interviewed Kelly Altom a Microsoft Group Program Manager for MOM.

One of the questions he asked was whether there will be an upgrade path from MOM 2000 to V3? And there will be no upgrade path at all, you should run it as a paralell system and migrate.

Just arrived at Microsoft IT Forum in Barcelona

I just arrived at Microsoft's IT Forum in Barcelona! Got my laptop
connected via Vodafone Mobile connect so I could blog.
We had some trouble getting into our reserved rooms at the Catalonia
Princesa Hotel in Barcelona because a whole group of our company already
arrived yesterday and someone had taken one of our rooms, but that's
    sorted now.

We probably are going to look at the town tonight and tomorrow Microsoft
IT Forum really starts for me. I'll try to blog about some sessions I've
attended (mainly Management sessions of course)

    Stefan Stranger

Drop me a note (stefan.stranger(at)hotmail(dot)com)if you are also
    visiting IT Forum in Barcelona.

Horizon for SAP Microsoft Operations Manager Edition

Last week we had a conversation with some people from Tidal Software about their Horizon for SAP Microsoft Operations Manager Edition solution.

According to their website is Horizon™ for SAP® is more than a simple performance monitor. It actually documents and automates SAP best practices for identifying and analyzing availability and performance problems within SAP. How well SAP performs determines how well your business is running. When a problem is occurring, you need to recognize it, analyze it and implement a recommendation now--not tomorrow. Unlike simple performance monitors, Horizon for SAP does not flood your console with data and assume you have the expertise and time to analyze it. Instead, Horizon for SAP provides an ‘Expert-in-a-Box™’ that performs the types of analysis and recommendations an experienced SAP Administrator would, automatically, 24x7x365 and in real-time. Instead of reacting to complaints, Horizon finally gives you the ability to proactively manage the service of SAP and fix problems before they become critical to your business.

But what I found more interesting is their solution to build  'trees' which could make real correlation possible. With their 'Logical Management Approach' it's possible to:
    • Context analysis to evaluate each alert by considering the prevailing operational characteristics of your SAP landscape.
    • Situation analysis to do in-depth data retrieval and analysis to to in-depth data retrieval and analysis just as one of your most experienced administrators do.
    • Resolution Analysis to identify solutions.

You could use their Logical Management Approach in their 'trees' to get real service monitoring in MOM! Hopefully I get me hands on their tool to create my own 'trees'. If so I'll let you know more about Tidal Software.

New Microsoft MOM site for sharing self-created MOM Management Packs, scripts and more from the MOM community

I already wrote about a new Microsoft MOM site for sharing self-created MOM Management Packs, scripts and more from the MOM community in my blog about the Best of Microsoft Management Summit 2005 in the Netherlands Part 1 and now it's there!

Have a look at the Code Gallery for MOM 2005. The CodeGallery is a site where you and other developers, IT professionals, and Microsoft employees can share, find, download, evaluate and discuss evolving .NET applications, uncompiled code, ideas, and technical documents.
